Q. 간단한본인소개
A. Hi, my name is Kelly Kim (김승주), (18), and I'm a first-year student at Santa Clara University, with a major in Management Information Systems and a minor in Retail Studies.

Q. 기억나는추억
A. I remember when I was in 1st grade in Korea, I had piano classes and 영어학원. I had to take a bus to get around, and one day, I fell asleep on the bus ride back home from the 학원. I went all the way to the end of the bus stations and it took me hours to get back home. Of course, my parents were worried sick and they waited in front of the house for me to come back. Due to this incident, I got my first cellphone!

A funny story about my childhood:
When I was in elementary school in Korea, I was in this singing group called, 짜장면과 단무지, and we were a big deal! We were on national television multiple times, and we travelled to different places for competitions and performances. I asked my mom about it recently, and she told me that she signed me up for this singing group because my mom could never sing and she really wanted me to carry out her dream!

Q. 삶의 주요 에피소드
A. I think the biggest event that happened to me was moving to the US, and it has affected everything. I couldn't even imagine what kind of a person I would be if I never experienced the education and the people interactions here. I developed my personality here, surrounded by open-mindedness. I learned a lot mostly about myself, and the professors at SCU really want me to succeed and they really guide me to be the best version of myself.
What is my favorite part about SCU?
My favorite part is definitely the professors at Santa Clara University. I was lucky to have met Professor Stephen Carroll, my critical thinking professor in my first quarter of college. He has helped me to grow tremendously as a person, constantly pushing my limits to think more critically about myself and others. Whenever I need help or just want to rant, his office is always open. He got me into the Honors Program at SCU, and is currently helping me to create a resume and a personal statement for future job interviews. I can't even imagine the person that I would be if I had never met Professor Carroll, and I wouldn't trade the education I'm receiving from him, along with all my other professors, for the world. Professor Carroll is a mentor that I will cherish for the rest of my life, and I'm beyond excited to see wheer he takes me next.

Q. 인생에 중요한 점은?
A. If you asked me this just one year ago, I would've said boys and makeup! But now, as I'm really growing up, I realized one of the most important things in my life are family and friends. They are the only ones who will be there for you unconditionally, and they're always there for support and encouragement. I've realized the true value of family and friends, and I would do anything for them to be happy.
I think the #1 most important thing in my life is my own happiness. I only get one life, and I'm done trying to please other people. I have so much I want to do, and so little time. I want to study everything I'm passionate about. I want to work in a place that I love waking up every morning for. It's my life and I'm only starting to live for myself.

Q. 인생에서 가장 행복한 시간, 가장 힘들었던 시간? 어떻게 극복했는지?
A. I've had a lot of happy moments in my life but I have to say that I'm the happiest right now. I'm taking classes that I'm actually interested in, which makes waking up at 7AM every morning so much easier. I'm meeting so many new cool people, and I'm now realizing my passion and dreams. I truly love my life right now and where I am, and it's only going to get better form here! The hardest time in my life was when my mom went back to Korea to return to her profession as a high school teacher. I was in 8th grade, and I didn't have a mother figure until senior year of high school. It was hard because that was the time I needed her the most, when I was starting to grow up and be responsible. But, we made it work. My mom would Skype call me all the time, and send pictures of clothes when she's shopping by herself to get my opinion and input.
And I also spent this time apart from my mom to get close to my dad. Before the move to the US, I barely remember seeing my dad because he was a company worker. When my mom was gone, it was just me and my dad alone for 4 years. We played tennis together and got competitive with each other, went out to dinner dates weekly, and watched TV together. I think I matured a lot faster because of this too, because I had to learn how to take care of myself and be responsible of my actions by myself. I appreciated my parents more after this because I really saw how hard they work and sacrifice for our family and for me to have the best education possible.

Q. 취미 혹은 스트레스푸는 본인만의 방법?
A. I love shopping. I love retail therapy. Whenever I feel stressed or overwhelmed by school, I uber over to a shopping mall and have time to myself. Whether I'm browsing through Sephora and swatching new eyeshadow palettes or lipsticks, or walking through the maze of Forever 21, I feel like there is no worry in the world. It gives me motivation at the same time because whenever I shop, I realize I'm not rich enough to buy everything I want. which makes me want to work harder to get to that point in my life when I can buy anything I want.

Q. 앞으로의 꿈은? 그 꿈을 위해 어떻게 노력하고 있는지?
A. I discovered my passion for beauty and makeup when I was in high school. I spent all day on YouTube watching makeup videos, both American and Korean. Now, I'm at a university to further my passion, which is why I'm taking a lot of studio art classes, art history classes, and a lot of marketing classes. Because I love makeup so much, going to school is so fun and amazing. I'm learning the business aspects of the beauty industry, as well as building strong foundations for whatever it is I end up doing later in life.

Q. 같은 미래를 꿈꾸는 후배들에게 조언 그리고 독자에게 전하고 싶은 말
A. If you have the opportunity to have the education in the US, don't let it go to waste. There is so much that it offers, like talking to your teachers/professors, playing sports, joining various clubs, and making friends. The friendships and connections you make with people will always lead you to become a better self. Also, it's so important to follow your passion. I know how cliche and cheesy that sounds, but you can literally do whatever your fun hobby is as a full-time profession. Give it your all no matter what task you're doing, take risks, and appreciate the education that you're receiving and make the most of it. Thank you for reading my story!
