1. Self Introduction

My name is Jessica Ricks and I'm from Los Gatos, CA. I'm half Japanese and half Caucasian! I have three younger sisters and I earned a B.S in Creative Advertising at San Jose State. I've been fashion and lifestyle blogging for six years now. You can find me on Instagram @hapatime or my blog www.hapatime.com. I love my life and travel a lot! Just in the last few months I went to Istanbul, France and Spain! These next few months I'll be traveling all over the US and Canada capturing fall, and in winter I hope to explore beautiful snowy destinations in Europe but I may just keep to North America since I'm not the biggest fan of cold :P

2. Any memorable episodes when you were young

Every summer and winter growing up, my family would fly or drive to Utah where my dad's family was. During a few summers we spent a week on a houseboat at Lake Powell with my aunts, uncles, grandma and cousins. Those were some good times . catching lizards (I was the best at it), wandering around looknig for secret coves, jetskiing, taking Herbal Essences baths in the lake (you never really get clean) and sleeping on the top of the houseboat, watching the stars before falling asleep. Christmases in Utah were always fun too, and I just can't believe I never learned how to ski or even appreciate the beauty of snow til I was much older.
Here's a random story . when my sister Jasmine (who now has been working for me for three years) and I were maybe 8 and 11 years old, we pushed our younger sister Chantel up in a tree in the backyard and couldn't get her down. Or maybe we didn't want to. She was just five years old maybe… and she cried. I think I remember thinking she deserved it for stealing all my candy. We told our mom she climbed up by herself and we had to get the neighbor to help her down with his ladder.

3. The motives/mentors/episodes to get the career

I was working as a graphic designer/web editor for a small software company when I stumbled across Chictopia.com, a fashion blogging community website (which is based in San Francisco) and it seemed both inviting and approachable to me. I had already tried doing some modeling for some friends that weer into photography and taken photography and photojournalism courses in college myself. I found a few other girls with blogs and photos I loved and I was so inspired to start my own blog. Instagram was founded shortly after and from there my blogging career took off! No one supported me for the first two years except my youngest sister Irene. She is the one who took all my photos for the first few years. I feel lucky to have such a sweetheart for a sister.

4. How do you like your job?

I love my job! It's just as they always say - best kind of job is the kind that doesn't feel like work! I grew up always staring at this 21 Suggestions for Success list my mom hung up on the wall. #2 is "Work at something you love, and that's worthy of your time and talent." I took most suggestions to heart, but this one most of all. I feel like fashion blogging was meant for me. It was born around the time I graduated college and I was ready for it. It's a funny kind of job though . every year I've been doing it, I've been expected to just be able to do whatever they throw at me. From hosting events, to walking down runways and speaking at conferences, from shooting beauty products, clothes and accessories to techie gadgets or cars, I've somehow done so much more than I ever knew I could and I'm proud of it!

5. What are important things for your life?

Laughter, making healthy choices, staying in shape and kindness are all priorities in my life. But in general just being happy is everything. I think you can be happy almost anywhere and with almost anything, it's really about perspective and attitude. Also, surrounding yourself with people you love and respect, but also who love and respect you is so crucial.

6. Most unforgettable happiest moments in your life?, Any obstacles? How did you overcome?

I try to stop time sometimes when I'm really, really happy and just tell myself that I'll remember it . but I feel like it happens so much I've lost count, and that's probably better anyways. My boyfriend makes me feel like that a lot, he's just really silly and cute and makes me so happy. Sometimes when my dog greets me, I just feel that surge of happiness as well. A few trips I've taken over the years have made me feel incredibly happy and excited about life too . such as when I went to Guam and I tried skydiving and scuba diving for the first time. Or when I went to Puerto Rico for the Bacardi Triangle and my sister and I had such an amazing time at the Halloween party and the private concert with Calvin Harris. Or that one trip my sister and I took to Paris, and it was just perfection everywhere I looked. Or what about Portland, Oregon . and those stunning, gorgeous, jaw dropping leaves . like heaven I swear. Oh I could go on forever…
I do always struggle with this thing called Hypoglycemia . it's where my blood sugar can get unstable pretty fast if I'm not careful. All of my sisters and I have had to deal with this our whole lives. It means if I don't have balanced snacks or meals, my blood sugar can drop too much or spike and then drop too low. So it's important to not only eat healthy, but to keep high protein snacks with me. I can get symptoms like sweating, impatience, shaky hands, trouble forming clear thoughts or not being able to speak as well as normal. And combined with adrenaline, like excitement or nervousness, it's even worse. I'm pretty sure a lot of people get Hypoglycemia and don't even know it.

7. Your hobbies when you have time? Your own methods to get rid of any stress?

When I have time, I like to read. I've always been a bookworm. I've found that delegating tasks relieves stress . but even better just learning how to breathe well is stress relieving. Also getting regular sleep and not making appointments relieves stress ..

8. What is your dream, and how you put efforts on it?

My dream is to continue and grow my blogging career and learn more every day. I'm always trying to meet people and look for new possibitlies.

9. Any advises for young generations who wants to have a same career like you, any comments to the readers?

Take a chance, you never know if you don't try. And don't be afraid to work hard and be persistent. Running a blog, and gaining a lot of followers is a big responsibility and don't be surprised when working for yourself is more rewarding than you ever expected but also more work than any job working for someone else.
